FAQs for booking flights from John Wayne (Santa Ana) to Honolulu

  • What are the qualifications for special group fare?

Typically, you'll add up to six people to the same reservation with American Airlines. But when traveling as a group of ten or more, use the Group & Meeting Travel option to get discounted tickets. American Airlines require carry-on bags to be at most 22 x 14.2 x 9.1 inches, including wheels and handles. Personal items must not be bigger than 17.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 inches. Musical instruments and pet carriers count as carry-on baggage, but safety child seats, mobility devices, medical appliances, breast milk coolers, breast pumps, and diaper bags do not.

KAYAK’s top tips for finding a cheap flight from Santa Ana to Honolulu

  • For a quicker trip, choose airlines that offer one layover between John Wayne Airport (SNA) and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), like United Airlines, Southwest, and Alaska Airlines. Common stopover points are San Jose Int'l Airport (SJC), Seattle-Tacoma (SEA), Portland Int'l Airport (PDX), Oakland Int'l Airport (OAK), San Francisco (SFO) Airport, and Las Vegas (LAS) Airport. However, American Airlines and Delta will likely have a second stopover at Kahului Airport (OGG) or Kona International Airport (KOA).
  • When bringing a minor (5-14 years) to John Wayne Airport (SNA) so they can travel alone to Honolulu International Airport (HNL), allow an extra 30 minutes for processing of the child's flight. United Airlines flight attendants will put the child's travel documents in an envelope and give them a wristband identifying him as an unaccompanied minor. The child is escorted to the aircraft with courtesy/priority boarding.
  • Enjoy the convenience of automatic check-in with Southwest Airlines EarlyBird Check-In at an additional fee. Instead of waiting 24 hours before your flight, you can reserve your boarding position 36 hours before scheduled departure. With improved seat selection, you have a high chance to grab your favorite seat and overhead storage.
  • Fly in an eligible cabin class like Delta One or have a SkyTeam Elite Plus status to enjoy unlimited access to Delta Sky Club Lounge at various stopover points. At Salt Lake City International (SLC) Airport, the lounge is on Level 2 of Concourse A, and at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International (MSP) Airport, you'll find the premier lounge on Concourse C of Terminal 1 near Gate C12. If your flight passes via SEA, check out Delta Sky Club Lounge on Concourse A next to Gate 1.
  • If you like watching your pet close by, choose an airline that accepts pets in the cabin, e.g., American, Delta, and United Airlines. On a flight by Southwest Airlines, avoid seats in the exit row or sections without under-seat stowage in front – they have no space for pets. Also, they do not accept animals as checked baggage; only six pets are allowed per flight.

It was cancelled due to crew. I missed a special family graduation due to this

Soda cans were mini-size; snacks were teeny. Options for entertainment on trans-continent flights were bad - no seat screens and no way to support device (as seen on other airlines) so had to hold device in position. Just overall, not good (compared to United)

I like the big picture of the Eskimo on the tail of the plane.

The crew members were wonderful. When we encountered a little turbulence, the pilots let us know and provided an estimate of how long it would last. Another nice amenity: every seat has AC power outlets and USB ports. It was a 6-hour flight, which seems a bit much for a single-aisle jet: over 200 passengers with access to only 3 restrooms (assuming you time it right and won't be blocked in by beverage carts); food is mediocre, over-priced, and (if you failed to reserve a meal ahead of time) the flight attendants have to process food/meal sales in the aisle. To access any entertainment, you must use your own device to log on to the plane's wi-fi (or bring your own entertainment).

Everything was great but there were no entertainment options available.

I didn’t know that food needed to be ordered ahead. Please include this in the reservation information. Overall, very good experience.

Great first time experience for me. The gate agent at the Anchorage location was so helpful. Definitely will be booking more on Alaska.

Delayed an hour and sat without updates. Ended up an hour late to destination

The flight was decent again if there was a place that you could put crying children that would be great. Or maybe make a rule against allowing infants on the plane.

Comfortable seat, plenty of leg room which is so rare, overhead bin comfortably accommodated my carry-on bag. Deli box was tasty, service was good, bathrooms were clean. Uneventful flight, which I appreciate. Departed on time and landed early.

There was plenty of overhead room but half of the passengers were told they had to check their carryon bags. My partner and I checked in as early as possible and our seats were split across the aisle.

Flew first class so everything was great. But maybe because the flights were red eye, no meals were served, just chips. I flew Alaska Air 1st class at 9PM (2 hour flight) and they served beef short rib sliders!

Paid premium for Delta only to be on safe but tired old 767 with ancient cabin in mediocre condition. Poor wifi and horrible inflight entertainment. Hardly a premium experience. Should have flown SW and had fun flight crew and no pretense

The plane from SNA wouldn’t start after 5 tries. The team gave me an option of flying direct from LAX and giving me a Lyft ride there! Perfect!

There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

The landing was bad and the hostess came two times and i was sleeping but when she served the person that nexts to me I woke up and she didn’t even asked me if I need any drink or snacks two times!!!!

The seats are too hard for long flights but otherwise- the process was smooth, the staff attentive, and there was to keep you occupied during the journey if needed.

Plane was late because of a mechanical malfunction and the food listed as available was not. Flight attendants seem over worked and under paid. They just done seem happy. And that can be seen in their faces.

Waited 3 hours on a plane to de-ice due to manpower issues. Waited another hour and a half once we landed because of a gate issue. Missed my connections. Created. A total of 13 hours of delay.

I liked my seat and the boarding was seamless once I arrived at the gate. The food was not good and they didn't have any vegan options. Some of the crew members were lacking empathy or personality

Well organized staff friendly and great attitude. Little awkward and slow to check a bag in Lihue but otherwise a pleasant experience

The flight was so cold from Vegas to Hawaii. Everyone was so cold they put on goodies. They made us buy blankets for $13 each for 4 people. The plane was like an icebox. Now on the way back you made me pay extra so my family can sit together. Will not use you again.

My seat was broken I couldn’t put it back I have really bad back issues , the flight was 5 hours delayed and there was a drink dude harassing the entire flight

No food or entertainment because it was a short flight. Unfortunately the takeoff was delayed more than an hour

We had an awesome flight attendant who came by and made sure we were okay. Checked on us often and even shared some snacks that she had brought on, like edamame with chili and garlic seasoning. Yummy!

Overall good experience. I'm just over 6ft with long legs and legroom could be better, but is on par with other airlines. Only real negative was turbulence but that's not the airlines fault.

Pilot and first officer did really an amazing job. I can best discribe their flying as finesse. Inital service with food/beverages was great, however after that the crew just kind of packed it in and were sitting in the galleys chatting for the remainder of the flight. I wanted a bottle of water, went to the mid plane galley, was told they were only available in the back, so had to walk the length of the plane just to get a bottle of water. That was a new experience on an airplane for me. Pretty sure evem Spirit will bring you the bottle of water you are paying for. Seat was comfy, magazine worth the read. Entertainment nonexistant unless you want to pop for the $4 headphones.

When I got into Maui I had a layover but there was a flight to Honolulu earlier. I asked the gate agent to see if I could get on the earlier flight to get home sooner. Ke'van is so great! He was very helpful and friendly and I appreciate him very much

This flight was delayed approximately 4 hours due to bad weather in HNL.

The entertainment wasn’t playing in the app or online.

Horrible, the flights kept delaying, so it is obvious that we won't be able to make it to the next connection. No easier/real agent on site to help you figure this out. UA agent on other counters refuse to assist you and direct us to use the QR code/call customer service. So inefficient and poor. While technology seems convenient, but it's not the best interest/experience for customers need help while there is active issue need assistance.

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

I had a great flight. Everything went smoothly and the flight arrived early.

On time take off…US cabins look tired and need of refresh!

I paid $380 for my one-way ticket from California to Minnesota. The fair did not include online check-in. I received instructions from their app to check in at a kiosk. At the kiosk, the boarding pass would not print until an actual person came to verify that I had a personal item and not a carry-on item, On the plane, the person next to me was drunk and allowed to continue to order alcohol. United is garbage I’d rather fly spirit.

Do not like the feeling of being in the basic economy. Everyone should feel good no matter what.

Terrible! The plane was old and you are required to connect your own device to their Wi-Fi rather than have entertainment options in the back of the seat in front of you. The Wi-Fi went out during the flight and there was only one plug for the devices every two seats. Three out of five surrounding my family did not work. The seats and spaces under them were so small I could not fit my backpack, which I’ve always brought on flights and fit before no problem. The crew were unpleasant and patronizing.

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

The flight was delayed several times without explanation. The seats were terribly uncomfortable and wifi isn’t included. All these make for a less than ideal flight.

Internet service was erratic. Crew service was poor and slow. My luggage on this non-stop flight was lost and not recovered

Flight was 1/2 hour delayed leaving Phoenix. Otherwise it was an average flight. Flight crew on this trip was very nice.

Horrible - they lied to me about baggage & boarding, even though I specifically spoke to their agents the day before my flight about my issue. When I showed up they did not let me board and stranded me at my airport until I bought a new flight with money I did not have to spend.

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Comfort of seats, ease of boarding. Food selection could be better

Food options were limited which is absolutely embarrassing for a Flight of this size The staff did not come around as much and I am not accustomed to such poor service from American Airlines Drinks I believe were limited to soda and water

Crew were attentive and friendly. Flight was smooth and early! I enjoyed the less crowded plane. Thank you!

We are gluten free, there were not any available complimentary gluten free options.

No meal on a cross country flight? SFO-MiA is pretty much the definition of a coast to coast flight. No meal provided. Sky high wi-fi rates too. Stop nickel and diming your customers.
