Flight from Detroit to Tokyo Narita Airport

FAQs - booking Japan flights

  • Will I need a visa to fly from Detroit to Japan?

Yes, US citizens flying into Japan are required to have a visa to be allowed into the country. The country doesn’t provide visas on arrival so you are required to apply for your visa through the Embassy of Tokyo weeks beforehand. You should also have a valid passport with at least one blank page for the immigration stamps.

  • Which airport in Japan is closest to the capital?

While there are two airports in Japan’s capital Tokyo, Haneda Airport (HND) is the closest to downtown Tokyo compared to Narita International Airport (NRT). It is also worth pointing out that Haneda is a cheaper airport to fly to although NRT Airport has the better facilities. Therefore, if you want to enjoy better facilities such as lounges and restaurants at the airport, consider booking a flight that lands at Narita Airport.

  • Are there any lounges at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport?

DTW Airport has six lounges where travelers can hang out while waiting to board their flight. Delta Air Lines has five Delta Sky Clubs in the McNamara Terminal and the sixth one is a Lufthansa Business Lounge. To get easy access to these lounges, consider booking either with Lufthansa or Delta Air Lines. Some of the amenities you can find at the lounge include free beverages and snacks, Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, and magazines among others.

  • Can I get a rental car at Haneda Airport?

While Tokyo has a relatively efficient public transport system that connects Haneda Airport to the rest of the city, you can still get a rental car at the airport to help you move around the city. There are over four rental companies at the airport and each one of them has a desk in the arrivals terminal. To get your rental, simply reserve from one of the desks and they will guide you to the parking lot where you can pick up your rental.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from Detroit to Japan?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from Detroit to Japan.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from Detroit to Japan?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight to Japan from Detroit is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Detroit to Japan?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to Japan with an airline and back to Detroit with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from Detroit to Japan?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to Japan from Detroit up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Japan

  • Morning departure is around 19% cheaper than an evening flight, on average*.
  • When flying from Detroit, you should book a flight from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). They are currently the only airport offering international flights to Japan.
  • To save on ticket costs, consider booking connecting flights instead of one direct flight. More often than not, airlines charge higher prices for the convenience and heightened demand of flying directly.
  • To use public transport in Japan more conveniently, consider taking a Japan Rail Pass, JR Tokyo Wide Area Pass, or any other JR pass once you arrive in Tokyo. These passes allow you to ride the metro trains for free.
  • The quickest way to DTW Airport would be by taking a taxi. They are easily available all over downtown Detroit and only take less than twenty-five minutes to the airport while public transport will take you upwards of an hour.
  • For any travelers with reduced mobility, you will be happy to know that DTW Airport provides free wheelchair services to help you get to different areas with ease. You can get the wheelchair by requesting one from the information desk or asking your airline to organize it on your behalf.

The space for the seats i like it. Its not too close like other air line. The food is ok and also the staff. I'm waiting for my flight rewards point because until now i didn't recieved it.

The staff, ground and air, at ANA was very helpful and friendly during check in, boarding and during the flight. This is the reason why I always fly ANA whenever I go to Manila. The food was not the best but the flight crew more than makes up for the shortfall.

First I will say this was really NOT an ANA flight. ANA used a UNITED jet to perform this flight. I specifically booked with ANA because I did NOT WANT TO FLY UNITED FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS. So to spend $1800.00 and then discover after booking that it was going to be handled by United was very disappointing. I will be more careful next time when I book. The interior was very cramped in economy class; the dinner meal was terrible and also had extremely small portions for an international flight - the bread roll was ice cold and stale - that salad was very wilted; I’ve never had a “snack” that was so salty that it was difficult to eat; the breakfast “waffle” was practically unrecognizable. Really horrible meals for a very expensive international flight. Bathroom floor was also pretty dirty. I’m hoping my return flight is a real ANA airplane that is cleaned and serviced by ANA personnel with ANA meals. I will never book with ANA again if they continue to use UNITED airline jets. Yuck!!!🤢

Ticket was purchased as a United Airlines flight (operated by All Nippon) like what does that even mean? Makes for a VERY confusing flight experience. For instance, what do I look for a United drop off signage and ticket counter or ANA? No explanation anywhere to be found. I also felt a little bit scammed by the obsurdely restrictive seat selection provided. Only middle seats available!! Are you kidding me!! On 6hr + 10hr flights you're forcing me into the middle seat without telling me before I purchased the ticket?? This should be illegal. And to top it off, on the Tokyo LA leg there were quite a few empty seats including window seats! I must also say, the food was a dissappointing as well for my taste, fish with rice ( mostly plain white rice) or a vegetable medly for the breakfast meal? Should be at least 4 choices and at least 1 with eggs. Outside of these issues flight was otherwise ok.

Ground and flight crew were all courteous, extremely helpful and professional. Overall, process is really organized, from boarding to disembarkation.

This is a very long flight and the first time I have flown on a Japanese airline. I was very impressed with the staff. They worked hard and offered food and drink regularly. Plane was very well cared for. The let room was good . Food was ok but better than other airlines.

It was very nice. I was a bit disappointed by the few meal services. There were probably more drink services that I missed while sleeping, but I would have liked the crew to bring more than one drink service before landing and to bring more than one drink service and coffee service after take off

The space and bed was very comfortable , flight attendants very nice. The food was not tasty at all. I ordered the rib eye and it was so tough I couldn’t cut it.

I wish the serve should leach and drink. Maybe because only 2hr

Seat was roomy enough . The Asian selection for a meal was good . The tortellini was not very good. Service was excellent. O

Wifi wasn’t working well so we couldn't view any media.

Food service was bare-bone. Better bot to have any at all rather than hand out premade coffees and cookies to random few passengers.

Crew was great. Friendly, calm, interesting, happy to be there. That makes a huge difference. Plane was very quiet. Also quite empty so I had three seats to sleep across

Had assistance at airport getting from arrivals gate to departure gate; I couldn't have managed without that extra help. Thank you Delta.

They charge me for the luggage which is was included on the ticket

More space in the cabin. The guy in front of me leaned his seat back and I felt he was sitting in my lap.

Was a great smooth flight from Detroit to San Diego.

Late flight, always blaming the flight crew, stale almonds, pushy people. Why don’t they have the people sitting in the back board first? So much easier getting through an empty plane! Duh!!

As we lined up to board they gave our plane to a flight going to Newark. So then we got delayed until they could find another plane. Flight crew was ok. I’m assuming since it’s a shorter flight they only offered water and coffee.

Food could have been better. A little more leg room would have been appreciated.

Flight was delayed 2.5 hours - a big deal on an overnight when you plan to sleep.

I feel like they have upgraded the app since I last flew United and I found it to be super helpful. I had stopped flying United unless absolutely necessary and my experience on this trip indicates they have been working hard to improve their services.

Surprisingly easy! I was hesitant to try this, but the cost swayed me. I actually felt like I had less stress than all the taxiing and possible delays that occur with short regional flights where you spend less time in the air than getting to and from the plane..

This flight was delayed multiple times and eventually canceled around 2-3ish. Original take off time was around 10:30am. By 3, there were no other options out of Houston, so stuck in Houston for from 3pm - 11am the next day.

Should have video screens Plane audio was poor and without wired connection hard to understand crew. Should serve more than just cups of water and pretzels on six hour flight. Did not see crew rest of flight. Fix charging sockets to retain charging blocks.

I paid $380 for my one-way ticket from California to Minnesota. The fair did not include online check-in. I received instructions from their app to check in at a kiosk. At the kiosk, the boarding pass would not print until an actual person came to verify that I had a personal item and not a carry-on item, On the plane, the person next to me was drunk and allowed to continue to order alcohol. United is garbage I’d rather fly spirit.

The plane was dirty and the in seat air wasn't blowing as planes usually do.

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Do not like the feeling of being in the basic economy. Everyone should feel good no matter what.

All flights were on time and boarding was issue free

Even though we left CMI late, we mostly made up the time.

Delayed almost 4 hours for a 45 minute flight with no explanation.

Again, multiple delays and I eventually just canceled and drove!

Great crew. Very comfortable business seats with nice bedding. Good food. We were delayed to let late passengers on the flight, but otherwise great experience.

Great crew. We were delayed so that late passengers could get on the flight. Love the bedding in business class. Good food. Great experience.

The CX617 from HK to BKK was delayed more than 1.5 hours.

Horrible - they lied to me about baggage & boarding, even though I specifically spoke to their agents the day before my flight about my issue. When I showed up they did not let me board and stranded me at my airport until I bought a new flight with money I did not have to spend.

I was in business class. There was an excellent headset. But half an hour before arrival they collected them! The rest of the trip I had to use a cheap earphone. There must be a better way to protect the headphones.

All four American Airlines flights I took in last seven days were delayed. Caused me loads of problems, missed meetings, loss of time and money.

American cancelled our flight home. Zero option for hotel, alternative transportation and took 3 hours to find our bags so we could take a 3 hour UBER ride home on our dime. Never flying AA again.

First time flying Air Canada and the trip was very pleasant! They did a great job getting us out of Toronto and into Rome (early!) For an international flight it was very enjoyable.

This is not a Business Class equipped airplane and even the crew apologize before take over BUT BUT Air Canada charged full business class fare

All was good, except our baggage was lost for most of a day. We are thankful that it was found quickly and delivered to our hotel. Rouge was fine outside of that problem.

You do not have a space for flight cancelled. BUT!!! Air Canada handled it great. Was booked on another airline for the next day. The original flight was booked solid. But he precheck by the maintenance found a mechanical problem and the plane was not safe to fly. It was an inconvenience to have to wait until next day but I would rather arrive safely.

Very good other than we have to wait for one crew and we’re delayed and the pilot and his co- pilot has to make a difference to be right on time arrival. Disappointed about no food service also.

I had written all my complaints on my trip from Grand Junction to Denver so I will repeat it here! I was absolutely appalled that I had to pay for a regular seat that I choose 24 hrs before boarding! Also I checked my large bag which I had to pay for as well, and by the time I boarded all the room in the bins were gone so also had to check that one. I noticed people pulling out oversized suitcases, bigger than the measurements stated for carry on, and also large pack packs stuffed full! So these people were taking up 2 or 3 spaces that the rest of us should have been able to use but couldn’t! NoTV on the flight! Thankfully I had downloaded the United Airlines app and was able to watch movies on my phone. Don’t remember the last time I flew in a plane with no movie screens!

I was appalled to have to pay for just a regular seat when I went to book 24 hrs before my flight! Because it was only an hour flight I didn’t choose a seat from Grand Junction to Denver, but I did for Toronto and had to pay just to choose a regular available seat! In my 60+ years of flying this was the first time I have heard of this. Also, allowing people to bring on “huge “ suitcases, not carry on size, but much bigger, and then a large pack pack stuffed. So they take up all the room in the overhead bins and if we are later boarding, there is no room so we have to check our small carry on. I have already paid for and checked in one bag! I certainly will not choose to fly with United again unless it is the “only” airline available!

Easy boarding, roomy seats, plenty of good food, very helpful snd friendly staff. Very smooth flight! Only thing that could have been better was to have cranberry juice. Women like this as it helps avoid UTI’s and not as sweet as other juices.

The crew was friendly, the seats are too small. Air travel is barely tolerable anymore.

Food was icecold or frozen including breakfast. Hopeless service. Rude crew.
