Pros:Ford Escape was fine, NBD, the value was OK.
Cons:The return-time policy. I gave a reasonably accurate estimate for the return time based on my flight. Plans changed and the car was returned over three hours after my estimated return time, but not late enough to go into another 24 hour period. $20 late fee was charged anyway. Naturally, nobody mentioned at checkout on the front end that I could give an unrealistically late estimate for the return and thereby give myself an additional seven hours of leeway. No early return penalty would apply. Payless admits they sting their customers this way and do not consider waiving or refunding the $20. I now know how to handle them next time.

Cons:No one answered the phone at Boston Logan Airport location. Toll free customer service routed to Mexico and was ineffective.

Pros:Although the woman at the desk was very nice there were no cars available when we got there. I requested a small car and they tried to give me a minivan. I finally got a mirage, but they neglected to tell me the mirage had motor problems. Luckily I made it from Boston to New Hampshire before it died in the parking lot. No one answered at the phone number I was given to call in an emergency. Eventually I got in touch with main headquarters. They were very nice on the phone. They switched out the cars. . . My small car became a boat and since the delivery was at night I didn't see the major gash on the side of the car. No one apologized. No discount was given.

Pros:No line even on Friday night of Labor Day weekend. Expedited line for getting out of the rental lot at Logan. Great car for our needs. Would definitely rent from Payless again.
